The Wolf Run

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

We had a great time at Friday Night Magic at our local hang-out, OMG! Games where we slung some of the new Innistrad cards in a Token Township build (see Twitter posty). One card which certainly scares the excrement out of token builds and Tempered Steel is Slagstorm, which can cripple your opponent's build. Slagstorm should be an obligatory inclusion in both Red Deck Wins (RDW) builds as well as Wolf Run Ramp, the latter of which we wish to yatter about in today's post.

We can recall the very first FNM event after the recent standard format rotation when during announcements made by the organiser Josh, there was an impromptu cry of 'No More Valakut!' went up, followed by a round of cheers from the players packed in the store. We knew that many were thinking in the back of their minds that there would still be a similar build which replaced the key cards in that build. This now brings us to the name of today's post, Wolf Run.

Some of the key cards in today's standard format mana ramp strategy are Primeval Titan, Solemn Simulacrum, Viridian Emissary, and Rampant Growth. All these cards have in common, the ability to provide the pilot with additional mana which can be employed to dump into cards such as Kessig Wolf Run, a fatty such as Primeval Titan (increasing the speed of the mana engine), or Green Sun's Zenith which circuitously can fetch your fatty of choice from your deck.

Here is a typical build with all the obligatory Magic the Gathering cards which should be considered for today's standard format ramp . . .

Wolf Run Ramp

26 Land : 4 Copperline Gorge, 8 Forest, 4 Inkmoth Nexus, 3 Kessig Wolf Run, 3 Mountain, 4 Rootbound Crag

15 creatures : 3 Solemn Simulacrum, 3 Wurmcoil Engine, 1 Acidic Slime, 1 Birds of Paradise, 3 Primeval Titan, 4 Viridian Emissary

19 other spells : 4 Beast Within, 4 Garruk, Primal Hunter, 4 Green Sun's Zenith, 4 Rampant Growth, 3 Slagstorm

15 sideboard : 1 Ratchet Bomb, 3 Sword of Feast and Famine, 2 Tree of Redemption, 1 Viridian Corrupter, 4 Ancient Grudge, 3 Thrun, the Last Troll, 1 Slagstorm

You may wish to also check out Brian Sondag's Wolf Run Ramp build which won him the Standard StarCityGames.com Open in Nashville, Tennessee recently. Don't forget to draw a few sample hands here to get the feel of the strategy.
